Breastfeeding is best
Nowadays, many mothers are choosing to breastfeed. Of course, breastfeeding is best for baby and mother! There are still many pediatricians, however, who trained in an era when the formula was encouraged over breast milk and who are not well educated in breastfeeding. Babies who are formula fed have slightly lower bilirubin levels than breastfed ones. It is not uncommon for doctors to recommend that a mother temporarily discontinue breastfeeding and give her baby bottles of sugar water in hopes of reducing bilirubin levels. This has been shown to be ineffective and it may even increase a baby’s jaundice. (Note: There is a syndrome known as breast milk jaundice; however, it is a rare condition that occurs in 1% of newborn jaundice cases.) Some research has concluded that a slight elevation in bilirubin may actually be helpful in preventing bacterial infections in newborns. Bilirubin also has the ability to function as an antioxidant in the brain. According to Dr. Sylvain Dore of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine: “When women breastfeed, the babies have higher levels of bilirubin and are healthier. Babies with higher bilirubin levels are more disease-resistant. Bilirubin also protects against retinopathy in premature babies.

Expose to Sunlight: You should keep your baby exposed to direct sunlight every day for about fifteen minutes for at least 4 times per day. Make sure that your baby’s skin is exposed and the sunlight is filtered by closing the glass window. However, a study states that exposure to sunlight can be even more effective than phototherapy in treating neonatal jaundice as it helps in the isomerization of bilirubin molecules one has to keep in mind that exposing to sunlight can help the child recover only in case of mild jaundices. If the baby doesn’t need phototherapy to help with jaundice, you can try exposing the baby to the sunlight. Hold the baby in a light sunlight with only a diaper on. Do not expose the baby to direct or intense sunlight, as the baby may be sunburned. Make sure that the baby is not out unclothed for a long period of time, as the baby may get cold.
Feed Frequently: Frequently feeding your child helps you in two ways. Firstly it flushes out the excess bilirubin and helps you keep the newborn hydrated and secondly it will also help you to increase the milk production from your breast. It is advised that under such circumstances the baby should be fed at an interval of 2 to 3 hours and whenever he/she wakes up at night. In some cases, if the doctor says that the breast milk is inadequate then formula supplements should be provided to the child to keep him/her hydrated.

Wheat Grass Juice: Wheatgrass juice has the fantastic quality of increasing enzymatic action of the liver. In other words, it enhances the ability of the liver to remove the excess bilirubin from the body. Feeding the child with 20 drops of wheatgrass juice mixed well with the formula can help the child. Alternatively, if the baby is only dependent on breast milk then you as a mother can drink 2 ounces of the juice every day as same will be passed to your child through breast milk.
